Delysg
Latin name: Palmaria palmata
English name: Dulse
Description
Delysg’s latin name, Palmaria palmata, is a nod to its central palm shape, with flat lobey fingers fanning out from the centre. It is medium sized and usually a beautiful red-purple colour.
Habitat
Delysg thrives in intertidal zones, clinging with its disc shaped holdfast to rocks and under larger seaweeds along the Welsh coast. It can withstand exposure to air during low tide and high energy environments.
Uses
Delysg is a favourite coastal snack with ‘super-food’ status due to its distinct smokey bacon-like flavour, scientifically-proven antioxidant properties, and nutrients, including iodine. In Ireland it’s eaten straight out of crisp packets but is also great in soups, fry-ups, salads, sauces, with potatoes, raw…
It can also be used to produce cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fertiliser and animal feed.
